Fine hair has its advantages. It dries quickly, has a lovely texture, and is relatively easy to manage. Still, it also tangles easily and lays flat against your head most of the time, so if you dream of big, voluminous 'dos, or even just a nice bouncy blow-dry, forget about it.

Or is there still hope for those of us not born with thick, luscious locks?

Fine hair is partly due to genetics and partly to diet and lifestyle choices. This means that you can do things to make your hair look fuller and healthier.

8 Hair Care Tips for Fine Hair

So what exactly can be done?

We're glad you asked. 😊

1. Diet Changes

The amount of macro and micronutrients your body absorbs directly affects your hair's health and beauty. So make sure you consume enough protein to nourish your hair follicles.

  • Vitamin C that your body will produce collagen, which strengthens the hair;
  • Iron helps blood cells deliver oxygen to your follicles;
  • Omega-3 fatty acids promote hair growth;
  • Zinc plays an essential role in the hair growth and repair cycle.

Enhance your diet with nuts, seeds, berries, fatty fish, and eggs, and you will start seeing results in a short time!

2. Conditioner the Ends Only

Only use conditioner and oil-based products on the bottom half of your strands. Applying them too close to your roots will flatten your hair – and is frankly unnecessary.

3. Dry shampoo

Dry shampoo is the not-so-secret secret weapon of people with fine hair. Washing your hair too often will strip it of its natural oils, dry your scalp, and can lead to hair loss, so instead, use dry shampoo to absorb excess oil and add texture and body to your thin hair.

4. De-stress

Yes, we know, it is easier said than done. But if you want to take the beauty and health of your hair seriously, you need to eliminate stress factors from your life or learn to deal with them in healthy ways. Hair growth and quality respond negatively to stress which is often a significant factor in hair loss. So, relax, slow down, and take life easy – your nerves and your hair will both thank you for it!

5. Blunt Haircut

A blunt haircut that is not too long – such as a straight bob – will create the illusion of a fuller mane. If you have fine, thin hair, avoid excessively long hair and layered haircuts.

6. No Heat

It is no secret that heat styling tools can damage your hair and gradually thin out the ends, primarily if you use them daily. Fine hair is even more prone to this kind of damage than other hair types, so you might want to ditch your heat styling tools and look for alternatives. Avoid curling wands, flat irons, heated rollers, and hairdryers as much as possible. Instead, let your hair air dry and use heatless methods for curly or wavy hairstyles (sock curls, anyone?).

7. Scalp Massage

Massaging your scalp stimulates your follicles and increases the flow of blood and nutrients, leading to increased hair growth and thicker, healthier hair. You can use a massage brush or a scalp massager – they come in both manual and electric versions. Also, scalp massages feel great and are pretty relaxing, too, so you might kill two birds with one stone and have yourself an excellent massage session to de-stress and stimulate hair growth.

8. Texturizing products

Texturizing products work by (temporarily) increasing the diameter of your hair, making it easier to manage and style, and adding more volume. There are thousands of texturizing products out there that come in different formats, including sprays, creams, and foams. The only way to know whether they will work well on your hair is to try them out.

If you take our advice and make all the above changes to your diet and hair care habits, the quality and texture of your hair will gradually improve.

However, if you want faster results, consider getting hair extensions. The right kind of extensions – which an experienced professional hairstylist should always apply – will add instant volume to your hair while also looking perfectly natural. Neither requires messy glue, heat, or harmful chemicals to install.

You can achieve fantastic results with hand-tied and tape-in hair extensions without damaging your own hair. Hand-tied extensions will give you the most natural look thanks to their thin wefts, and they also last longer than tape-in extensions but are a bit more expensive. However, tape-ins are easier to install and remove.
